イギリス出張の学びと出会い 北アイルランド・プロ写真家協会第60回大会の体験記 Learning and Connections in the UK: A Report on the 60th PPANI Convention

イギリスで開催された北アイルランド・プロ写真家協会（PPANI）第60回大会での記念講演は、私にとって大きな挑戦であり、貴重な学びの場となりました。英語が話せない私が、通訳の助けを借りながら自分の作品や考えを伝え、多くのフォトグラファーと交流できた経験は、今後の活動に大きな影響を与えそうです。今回はその旅の様子と得た気づきを詳しくお伝えします。 Giving a keynote lecture at the 60th Professional Photographers Association of Northern Ireland (PPANI) Convention in the UK was both a major challenge and a valuable learning experience for me. Despite not being a fluent English speaker, with the help of an interpreter, I was able to share my work and philosophy and connect with many fellow photographers—an experience that will surely shape my future endeavors. In this post, I’d like to share the details of my journey and the insights I gained.

講演準備と通訳とのリハーサル　Preparation and Rehearsals with My Interpreter

私の講演は、自身の生い立ちから始まり、作品紹介、ウエディングフォトのストーリーテリング、オマージュ作品の作り方や考え方について話す内容でした。専門用語や発音の難しい言葉も多く、英語の通訳をフォトグラファーの早坂華乃さんに全面的にサポートしてもらいました。

事前に資料を渡し、前日と前々日にリハーサルを重ねたことで、言葉のニュアンスやタイミングの調整ができました。私は「ぶっつけ本番でも大丈夫？」と思っていましたが、リハーサルで問題点が明らかになり、華乃さんの存在にどれほど助けられたか。

この準備のおかげで、当日はスムーズに講演を進めることができ、参加者からの質問も多く、熱心にメモを取る方もいて、やりがいを感じました。

My lecture covered everything from my personal background and a showcase of my portfolio to storytelling in wedding photography and the concepts behind my "homage" works. Given the many technical terms and challenging pronunciations, I relied entirely on photographer Kano Hayasaka for English interpretation. By providing her with materials in advance and holding rehearsals over two days, we were able to fine-tune the nuances and timing of the speech. Thanks to this preparation, the presentation went smoothly, and I found it incredibly rewarding to see the audience taking notes and asking such insightful questions.

イギリスのフォトグラファーとの交流と学び Insights from Connecting with UK Photographers

バーミンガムで開催されたフォトエキスポTPSでは、イギリスのフォトグラファーの技術レベルの高さを肌で感じました。日本との格の違いに驚き、正直なところ落胆する場面もありましたが、同時に私の資格や経験に対して敬意を示してくれる皆さんに励まされました。

印象的だったのは、経歴や実績を素直に認め合い、賞賛し合う文化です。これはフォトグラファーとしての成長に欠かせない要素だと感じました。 At "The Photography Show (TPS)" in Birmingham, I experienced firsthand the high level of skill among UK photographers. To be honest, I was momentarily overwhelmed by the gap between the standards there and in Japan. However, I was also greatly encouraged by how everyone showed respect for my qualifications and experience. What struck me most was the culture of openly acknowledging and praising each other's achievements—a mindset I believe is essential for growth as a photographer.

PPANIアワードセレモニーの華やかさ　The Splendor of the PPANI Awards Ceremony

大会の翌日に行われたPPANIアワードセレモニーは、非常に盛大で華やかなものでした。男性はタキシード、女性はイブニングドレスでドレスアップし、会場は緊張感と祝福ムードに包まれていました。

私はAIに相談してブラックスーツを選びましたが、受賞者へのプレゼンターを務めることを考えると、少し後悔もありました。シャンパンのウエルカムドリンクは空きっ腹には強く感じたため控えましたが、ディナーではScott Johnsonのワークショップでモデルを務めたフォトグラファーのAgnieszka & Ryan夫妻や前会長のSteven Neesonと楽しい時間を過ごしました。

この席で、私がBIPPでフェローを取得した際のパネルジャッジであるDavid Stanbury氏と初めてお目に掛かれ、私の作品を覚えていてくれたことに感激しました。また、ラスベガスで会ったばかりの Kelly Brawnともゆっくり話す機会があり、彼女のビデオでラッピングを学んだことを伝えられたのも嬉しい出来事でした。 The PPANI Awards Ceremony held the following day was a grand and elegant affair. With men in tuxedos and women in evening gowns, the atmosphere was a perfect blend of anticipation and celebration. While I chose a black suit after consulting with an AI, I felt a slight pang of regret for not dressing even more formally, given my role as a presenter. At the event, I finally had the chance to meet David Stanbury, who served as a judge for my BIPP Fellowship panel. I was deeply moved that he remembered my work. It was also wonderful to catch up with Kelly Brown, whom I had just met in Las Vegas, and tell her how much I had learned about wrapping from her instructional videos.

今回のイギリス出張は、PPANI会長のMelissa Wright氏やFUNDY DESIGNERのCEO Jonathan Mainのおかげで実現しました。本当に感謝の言葉も見つからない程です。そして奥さまのSandy、日本からの同行者、今道しげみさんと早坂華乃さんが彩りを添えてくれました。おかげで楽しく、充実した旅となりました。

イギリスのフォトグラファーたちとの交流や高い技術に触れた経験は、私の作品制作や考え方に新たな原動力をもたらしそうです。これからも学びを活かし、より良い作品を生み出していきたいと思います。

フォトグラファーとしての成長は、技術だけでなく人とのつながりや文化の理解からも生まれます。まさに今回の旅はそのことを改めて教えてくれました。 This trip to the UK was made possible thanks to PPANI President Melissa Wright, Fundy Designer CEO Jonathan Main, and many others. Connecting with UK photographers and witnessing their exceptional skills has given me a new surge of motivation for my own creative work. I look forward to applying what I’ve learned to create even better imagery. This journey reaffirmed that growth as a photographer comes not only from technical skill but also from human connection and cultural understanding.
