When fellow photographers gather, the topic that inevitably comes up is the serious problems facing the photography industry today.
In particular, complaints and reports of trouble from clients are seen on social media almost every single day.
For example:
"I hired a photographer for a Shichi-Go-San on-location shoot, but all the photos had the focus on the parents, not the child."
"The photographer didn't even show up at the meeting place on the day of the shoot!"
"I paid a high price for a pre-wedding shoot at a famous photo studio, but the final result was terrible..."
The list goes on and on.
What is even more saddening is that other photographers jump in to judge the quality of those photos, and general users leave cold comments like, "It's your own fault for outsourcing such an important shoot to someone nobody has ever heard of." Furthermore, due to the poor manners of some photographers at shooting locations, instances of cherished photo spots becoming "prohibited for photography" are happening one after another.
The problem doesn’t stop there.
Currently, the market is flooded with people undertaking one-hour shoots for just a few thousand yen. Naturally, those who bear the brunt of this are the genuine professional photographers who have honed their skills and work with responsibility. While it is impossible to sustain a business at such low prices, a significant number of clients drawn to the cheapness are flowing in that direction.
However, there is always a reason for everything.
The reasons for these low prices are things like "not having confidence in my skills yet" or "just wanting to build a portfolio (sample works) no matter what."
Originally, someone who has fully acquired professional skills and responsibility should call themselves a "professional," but today's environment is truly a lawless zone. Clients who hire someone thinking, "A professional will shoot this for a cheap price," find their expectations betrayed, resulting in a vicious cycle of heartbreaking grievances being posted on social media.
In a capitalist society, price competition is a natural rule.
However, there is a limit to everything. The current state of the photography industry has clearly crossed that line.
At this rate, the younger generation jumping into the professional world with dreams of photography, the professionals who have fought with pride up until now, and the consumers who wanted to preserve precious memories—no one will be happy.
In the past, with the strong desire to "leave the job of a photographer as a 'dream profession' for the children of the future," I continued various activities outside of my own photography work. However, the social and industry environment, far from getting better, is only deteriorating.
If things continue like this, I will not be able to hold my head high before the children of the future, nor before the predecessors who elevated photography as an art and a culture.
Driven by this sense of crisis and strong conviction, I have decided to team up with local friends to hold the "Tokushima Photography Industry Revitalization Conference" in Mima City, Tokushima Prefecture, on August 26. Attendance is free.
To everyone making a living through photography in local Tokushima:
Shall we end the era of just lamenting the current situation on social media? Let’s share our anxieties together, figure out how we should act as professionals to better the future of photography, and work hard to find a breakthrough. I look forward to your participation.
